Weekly Virtue: Preparedness

Today is the first Sunday of Advent. Which means we are just weeks away from Christmas. And with Christmas comes so much planning and preparing and getting ready. We are putting Christmas parties on the calendar, updating our Christmas card lists with addresses of family that has moved, purchasing Christmas presents and making list after list of things that need to be done. Which is why I think Preparedness is the perfect virtue for the week.

Preparedness is defined as the quality or state of being prepared. So when we think about Advent and what Advent PREPARES us for, are we ready?

The Gospel today is from Matthew. It talks of being prepared. But we need to stop and really think. What are we preparing for? And are we preparing for the right thing? In the Gospel Jesus talks about His second coming. He talks about the days of Noah, when the world was going on about their lives with little regard for the flood that was coming. When they did come to realize what was happening, their heads was already underwater. This will be the same as when Jesus comes again. We will not know when He will return, but let us all hope our heads are not caught up in the wrong things when He arrives.

Jesus says, "For you do not know on which day your Lord will come. Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into. So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”

Jesus asks us to stay awake. Stay awake and prepare ourselves for His coming. Let us stop and think:

If we were to know He was coming tomorrow, how would we prepare? What would we change? We show Jesus where our hearts lie through our actions. How would we show Him our hearts are ready for Him? Let us be sure to live our lives this Advent (and until His arrive) preparing for HIM. Let us not be complancent. Let us put our focus where it needs to be NOT preparing for Christmas but be preparing for CHRIST.
